At the beginning of the 19th Century, one of the most fascinating chapters of Portuguese Wine was born, a wine that would become an icon, an object of desire, yet always kept, by its own choice, away from the spotlight. Its creator, Alexandre de Almeida, introduced the idea of combining luxury hospitality with a cellar and a wine of its own. Thus were born the great Wines of Buçaco. Looking back from its first harvests, we understand the importance of this icon, which was served to kings, queens, and heads of state, as shown by the menus proudly kept at the Palace Bussaco Hotel. The wines of Buçaco were indeed objects of reverence, limited to very select circles, the elite. The Buçaco wines were, and still are, always made in the same way, following the same old principles. Their "blend" from the regions of Dão and Bairrada thus guaranteed a brilliant wine, which matured nobly in the bottle, and their fantastic and noble labels still bear today the symbol of their pedigree, their lineage. Drinking a Buçaco is to travel through time, to drink a glorious wine, created by Alexandre Almeida, a visionary. This is an opportunity that all who appreciate Wine should have, even if only once in their life.
