Porto Niepoort Garrafeira 1987

The second generation of the Niepoort family, at the end of the 19th century, had the fortunate idea of acquiring from a German glassmaker in Oldenburg about 4000 blown demijohns, made of dark green glass, with capacities ranging from 8 to 11 liters, which we now call “demijohns.” Eduard Niepoort's son, Eduard Marius van der Niepoort, Dirk's grandfather, put the demijohns to use and bottled the best wines from the 1931 harvest, thus creating the “Garrafeira Niepoort” type. From the distant year of 1931 to the present day, maturation in demijohns sealed with cork is carefully monitored, being an almost “sacred” ritual for the Niepoort and Nogueira families. Garrafeira is not just a wine; it also means quality far above traditional standards. Porto Garrafeira is a unique and very special style of Porto. In tasting, it reveals a huge blend of sensations, aromas, and flavors with a perfect balance between youth and experience, between the freshness of fruit and the “good old age” that only long years of aging can confer.
